WELS Regional Bandfest 2012 at WLA

Watch the live stream of the WELS Regional Bandfest 2012
from WLA on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 2:00 PM!

I think the WELS Bandfest is one of the best kept secrets of the instrumental programs of our WELS high schools.  It is an honors band of almost 100 of the best student instrumentalists from the 22 WELS Lutheran high schools scattered around the USA. But unless a regional or national Bandfest is being hosted by a WELS high school in your area or unless you have a son or daughter playing in one, you may have never even heard of it, let alone been to a Bandfest concert.  Winnebago Lutheran Academy is hosting one of the two of this year's regional Bandfests (the other is at Northland Lutheran HS near Wausau this same weekend.)

Schools participating at WLA this weekend are Arizona Lutheran Academy, Evergreen LHS, Fox Valley LHS, Huron Valley LHS, Illinois LHS, Kettle Moraine LHS, Lakeside LHS, Michigan LHS, Nebraska LHS, Luther Prep School, Rocky Mountain LHS, and Winnebago Lutheran Academy.

UW-Whitewater Junior Music Audition Clinic

I got an email today from the Music Department at UW-Whitewater and it reminded me how intimidating it is to audition not only for any musical organization, but especially for the first one that most music students encounter: a music scholarship at a college or university.  To help high school music students prepare for such an audition, many colleges, universities, and schools of music are offering a day to teach incoming Freshmen how to prepare for a successful music audition.  Here's the information from UW-Whitewater:

Dear Music Colleagues and Friends,

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Music Department would like to announce a special event for high school juniors—Junior Audition Clinic—to be held on Friday April 13, 2012.   As you know, colleges and universities require music students to perform an audition for admission as a music major. This day is designed to help students prepare for a successful audition.

During this event, students will have an opportunity to audition for our faculty, all of whom are active performers and teachers.  The faculty will provide feedback and advice about audition repertory and what is expected at an audition.

The events begin at 8:30 a.m. and include:
·         Gathering and registration
·         A warm-up time for auditionees
·         Individually-scheduled auditions with UW-W Faculty members
·         A presentation on preparing for the music major
·         A breakout session to discuss audition procedures in specific performance areas
·         A financial aid information session for parents
·         A masterclass or lesson with faculty in the student’s performance area
·         A tour of the music facilities and a campus tour

Students who have participated in the Junior Audition Clinic in previous years have told us that this event helped them to more confidently prepare for college admission/scholarship auditions and for pursuing a major in music.

Your students can register for the Junior Audition Clinic by filling out the registration form on the music department website at: http://www.uww.edu/cac/music/events/special_events.html.  Please encourage your students to register by April 6, 2012.

I hope to meet you and your students at this event!

Solo Ensemble Results - March 3, 2012 @ Lomira HS

Congratulations to all the WLA who performed this past weekend for the Flyway District WSMA Solo Ensemble Festival at Lomira High School!  The asterisks by the 1's (*1 = starred first) mean those events qualified for the State Solo Ensemble Festival, April 28, 2012 at UW-Oshkosh.  A state finalist's recital will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 6 PM in the WLA Choir Room for those students who will be performing at State.  The recital is free and open to the public, as is each Solo Ensemble Festival (District or State).

A second weekend of District Solo Ensemble will be held Saturday, March 10, 2012.  Look for those results a week from today.
